Five Tips For Your Holiday Bar
Quality Over Quantity
When going to your local liquor store, even it’s Trader Joe’s, take a minute to chat to the nice shop keep about what you’re buying, and what you want to do with it. It doesn’t have to be expensive. Just tasty.
If price is a consideration, don’t feel pressure to offer every kind of spirit to guests. If there are two or three types of liquor set up. there will be something for everyone to raise a glass to.
Consider Your Ice & Glassware
Is there really something to the type of ice and glassware when it comes to how liquor and cocktails taste? Really? Really?
Yes. Really. A large hunk in a tumbler of Macallan or shaved ice in a Mojito really does change the way we drink and taste alcohol. If you plan on serving sipping drinks, pick up a King Cube ice cube tray. Stores like Sur La Table or even Amazon.com carry them or something similar.
Coupe glasses are back. They are not only stylish, but many of them hold four ounces instead of eight, which is perfect for a party where guests might be having more than one drink. Cocktail glassware is made to accentuate the smell, feel, look and enjoyment of a beverage; most recipes will note what type of glass will make the cocktail happiest.
Restaurant supply stores are a great place to pick up glasses on the cheap, and they even sell disposable versions in the usual spots.
Try a Signature Cocktail
Did we scare you yet? Never fear. Here’s the easiest solution for the Holidays. Buy great wine and beer and create one signature cocktail for the evening. Work it around the theme of the party, or make something easy like a Side Car or Classic Manhattan. Newer cocktails such as an Air Mail will make it seem like you put extra time and effort without much cost. Still nervous? Nothing says December like a big ol’ Rum Punch. Easy to make, serve, and it’s a great way to get people mingling!
Handling Host Gifts
It happens every time: A guest brings an expensive bottle of something (or maybe a surprisingly cheap bottle of something else). Does the giver of the prize expect it to be displayed, or will they be offended if you offered up something they bought just for you?
The answer is simple: Just ask. Would you like me to put this out for everyone or save it for another day? People usually tell you what they expect. If it’s something you aren’t comfortable serving, don’t make a big deal. Just say thanks and grab a hug. That’s what most people want at a party anyway.
To Nog or Not to Nog
Spending hours and money preparing egg nog or mulled wine to have it sit in a corner is no fun. So, is it worth it? As a lover of these kinds of drinks, it’s hard to say no. However, adding more set up time to a party can make or break a good mood. Why not wait until guests arrive and see who’s interested. There’s always a friend who feels more comfortable hanging out in the kitchen, and it’s very exciting for guests to feel as if they are waiting for a special treat.
